“ If I was in charge of giving out Michelin stars, JJ’s would have three. This was, without exaggeration, among the most perfect meals I have ever had. If you came for the food, wow, you’re in luck. I had the blackened chicken. It was a quarter chicken, dark meat. To say it fell off the bone and melted in my mouth would hardly describe how tender this chicken was. The char on the chicken added a perfect savory and blackened note. The Mac and cheese was also creamy to the point of coating your mouth with excellent and rich flavors. Some of the best I’ve had. The cornbread was also incredible. If you imagine the perfect texture for cornbread, you’ll know what it actually feels like after visiting JJ’s. My companion had the pork chop, and the only thing I could say was wow. Fried to perfection, crisp on the outside and melt on your mouth on the inside. Radically good. The greens and cabbage he had as sides “moved his soul.” We split wings as well, and it felt like God smiled on them. The hot lemon pepper is the best spice rub I have ever had on a protein, and the hot and sweet sauce was complex, tangy, and delicious. A restaurant, though, is not just the food it serves. And it was evident that JJ’s is so much more than that for its community. The walls were lined with Bible verses. One sign that particularly stood out was the large one on the wall that said “spiritual food.” That it was. All told, the restaurant’s atmosphere was an incredibly intentional reminder of the spirituality, history, care, and love in every bite of the food at JJ’s. The staff behind the counter were so profoundly friendly and authentically cared about each patron. We ate in the restaurant, and they constantly checked in to ensure our experience was the best it could possibly be. Their care for us demonstrated the pride they had in the food, as evidenced by the largest smiles I’ve ever seen when we told them how much we enjoyed the food. Profoundly meaningful was the fact that we let them know that we were on a road trip from Texas to Nashville, and, as we left, they told us they would pray for our health and safe travel. We made it back happier and more fulfilled thanks to the kind and talented staff at JJ’s. I give this place 100 stars out of 5. “ Baby, let me tell you, I came in as a complete stranger but left feeling like family. The owner greeted me with a smile & a joke, and it caught me off guard, so I jumped back and she got so tickled, I instantly felt welcomed. The steam table looked good, and I was new & didn't have a clue what to try. So, I went with the universal option, baked chicken & LAWD HAF MERCY!! That da** chicken was so good and falling off the bone. The bones almost dissolved in your mouth the chicken was so tender. Then the cabbage......baby I ain't had cabbage that good since my sweet mama passed away. I didn't get yams but my family wore them OWT! Needless to say, I'll be back tomorrow!! I enjoyed everything.
